The Road Kill Diary
In the summer of 2021, at 20 years old, I proudly obtained my driver’s license. Excitedly, I borrowed my father’s car and embarked on my first road trip, exploring city streets and rural outskirts. However, my joy was soon overshadowed by the recurring sight of roadkill. As an animal lover, these scenes were heartbreaking—small animals crushed under vehicles, their fragile lives cut short in a human-dominated world they couldn't navigate.

For three years, this silent grief lingered until mid-2024, when I resolved to act. Discovering the Guokr Nature website, a platform documenting roadkill data on an interactive map, I identified highways with the highest occurrences. In October 2024, shortly after the National Day holiday, I began a five-day, 5,000-kilometer solo observation project. Starting from Guangzhou, I traveled through some of China’s most roadkill-prone highways, meticulously documenting the phenomenon to shed light on this pressing issue.
