More Bricks, Less Bricks, PublicationSince China's reform and opening-up, urbanization has progressed at an extraordinary pace, leading to widespread construction and renovation. This rapid transformation has generated a significant amount of construction waste. Amid this, some residents have begun repurposing discarded materials, particularly waste bricks, to create items that blend practicality and aesthetic appeal. These efforts include paving roads, constructing flowerbeds, crafting furniture, and designing functional tools.

Over the past year, we conducted field research in various urban villages across the country, documenting this phenomenon and categorizing it into six stages

To effectively present this extensive data, we developed a variable typeface inspired by the adaptability and modularity of bricks. The typeface incorporates grid-like features and visually represents the varying quantities of bricks, transitioning from intricate detail to generalized abstractions. This design choice underscores the transformative potential of discarded materials and aligns with the themes of adaptability and resourcefulness observed in our study.
